Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy which uses a 5 part model to explore how our thoughts, feelings, physical state and behaviours all interact within an environment. CBT will help you to challenge thoughts and behaviours in order to change the way you feel and behave. It's most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other mental and physical health problems. Its structure allows for empirical testing and as such many randomised controlled trials have demonstrated its effectiveness. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommend CBT as a first line treatment for anxiety and depression either alone or in conjunction with medication.
